Scholarship Description:
Dr. Xu Shuchang is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Architecture from Tongji University, a Master’s in Science from Bauhaus University Weimar, and a PhD from Politecnico di Milano. She is a Marie Curie Scholar.
Dr. Xu is a historian and conservation expert with a background in architecture, urban studies, and the history of science and technology. Her research focuses on the specific forms modern science takes in China and how Chinese culture and environment shape Western knowledge. Over the past fifteen years, she has explored cognitive culture in engineering through empirical studies of building materials, employing historical research, lab analysis, fieldwork, and digital methods.
In 2013, she earned her PhD in Architectural Heritage Conservation from Politecnico di Milano and has been active in fostering dialogue between architecture and the history of science and technology. Since 2014, she has undertaken several research projects, including “Fired Clay in the Architectural Environment: Western Heritage in China” and “Mineral Building Materials in China: Rediscovering Architectural Environments from Local Chronicles Data.” Her work has received support from various organizations, including the EU Horizon 2020 program and the Paul Getty Foundation. Her findings have been published in journals such as Technology and Culture and Journal of the History of Science and Technology. Currently, she is working on two projects related to engineering culture.
From 2017 to 2023, Dr. Xu served as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Department of Architecture, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation. She taught in various programs, including doctoral training, post-master’s courses, and integrated design studios.
Over the past twenty years, Dr. Xu has worked on world heritage sites and historical locations in China and Europe, initially as an architect and planner, later as a conservation expert and educator. As a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), she has initiated projects to bridge the gap between stone conservation expertise and sustainability issues. She is also a member of the Scientific Committee for the International Conference on the History of Architecture and holds roles in several scientific societies, overseeing related trust committees.
