Scholarship Description:
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was established in 2017 and is the first biomedical engineering department in Hong Kong. It ranked 11th globally (1st in Hong Kong) in the 2024 Shanghai Subject Rankings. Professor Liting Duan’s research group is actively recruiting PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
The group focuses on interdisciplinary research, covering synthetic biology, cell biology, neuroscience, and molecular biology. Research areas include (1) exploring the vast and unknown mechanobiology, physical activities, and biomechanical properties within cells; and (2) developing novel gene therapy methods. Specific research topics can be customized and discussed with the project leader based on the applicant’s expertise, interests, and experience.
Professor Liting Duan obtained her PhD from Stanford University in 2016 and joined CUHK in 2018. She received the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Investigator Award in 2024. In recent years, she has published multiple papers as corresponding author in prestigious journals such as Developmental Cell, PNAS, and Cell Chemical Biology. The team currently consists of 12 members, including several recipients of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) and the President’s PhD Fellowship.

PhD Applicant Requirements
- Must hold a bachelor’s degree from a top national university with excellent grades; research experience is preferred.
- Applicants with a master’s degree should have graduated from a reputable institution and published at least one first-author English paper during their master’s studies.
- PhD stipend: HKD 18,870/month.
- Language requirements: IELTS 6.5 or above, or TOEFL iBT 79 or above.
- Exceptional candidates will be supported in applying for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which offers HKD 331,200/year and travel expenses of HKD 13,800/year. (https://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html)
Postdoctoral Applicant Requirements
- PhD in biological sciences or related fields (preferably in neuroscience, molecular biology, cell biology, synthetic biology, or bioengineering) with experimental research experience.
- Strong research achievements and potential for innovative work; ability to conduct independent research.
- Good communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Competitive salary based on research ability and experience. Contract duration is 3 years, with renewal negotiable based on performance.
