Scholarship Description:

The Houston Methodist Research Institute (HMAI) is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College and located in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center globally, known for its strong academic atmosphere and significant achievements.

Professor Qing Yi has over 25 years of experience in biomedical research and currently works at the Cancer Center of HMAI. He holds several positions, including Ralph O’Connor Centennial Chair, Director of the Center for Translational Research in Hematologic Malignancies, and Deputy Director of Basic Research at the Cancer Center.

Our lab focuses on: (1) novel immune and biological therapies for the tumor microenvironment and multiple myeloma (Yang et al, Cancer Cell 2006 and 2007; Bi et al, J Clin Invest 2018; Wang et al, Blood 2020 and 2022; Liu et al, Nat Commun 2021), (2) the role and function of IL-9-secreting Th9 and Tc9 cells in tumor immunotherapy (Lu et al, J Clin Invest 2012; Lu et al, PNAS 2014; Lu et al, Cancer Cell 2018; Xue et al, Cancer Cell 2021; Xiao et al, Nature Cancer 2025), and (3) the impact of lipid metabolism on tumor-specific T cell dysfunction (Ma et al, J Exp Med 2018; Ma et al, Cell Metab 2019 and 2021; Xiao et al, J Clin Invest 2022).

Our lab is well-funded and has a strong research atmosphere. We seek responsible, proactive, hardworking PhD graduates with the ability to work independently.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Salary standards follow NIH guidelines (recent PhD graduates start at $64,058, with adjustments for more senior candidates).
  • Candidates should have an MD and/or PhD, with a strong interest in tumor biology and tumor immunotherapy. Preference will be given to recent PhD graduates with backgrounds in oncology or cell biology and proficiency in mouse handling, though all qualified candidates will be considered.
