Dumbarton Oaks is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Byzantine Coins to collaborate with the museum team on cataloging, publishing, and exhibition projects related to the coin collection. The successful candidate will receive training in digital cataloging, collection management, and exhibition planning. They will catalog newly acquired early Byzantine coin collections from Mansfield and Shaw, describing and recording these coins for the online coin catalog. Additionally, they will work with registrars to log and store coins and assist in photographing the collection.
Building on work from nomisma.org, the postdoctoral fellow will help establish a joint database for cataloging and digitizing Byzantine coin collections worldwide. They will collaborate with curators and exhibition managers to plan temporary exhibitions of the coin collection and participate in educational programming. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop career skills in digital humanities, museum curation, and collection-based education. The fellow will also engage with the vibrant Byzantine studies academic community at Dumbarton Oaks and may allocate 20% of their time for personal research.
The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two years. Applicants must have completed all requirements for their PhD by the time of application. The postdoctoral fellow will report to the curator of coins and seals.
The fellow will have access to the institution’s excellent resources and become part of the broader research community at Dumbarton Oaks. The annual salary is $67,600, with an additional $1,000 annual taxable research stipend. The fellow will also receive health insurance through the Dumbarton Oaks Fellow Program, access to office space, library, and museum collections, as well as free lunch on workdays.
Available Subjects:
- Collaborate with the Coin Collection Department at Princeton University’s Firestone Library and representatives from nomisma.org to establish and implement a linked open data platform for Byzantine coins.
- Assist with the logging, storage, and cataloging of newly acquired early Byzantine coins from Mansfield and Shaw.
- Expand the Dumbarton Oaks online coin catalog. Assist in rephotographing the collection.
- Participate in educational activities related to the coin collection.
Eligibility criteria:
- PhD in History, Art History, or Archaeology, with a focus on Byzantine studies.
- Strong research skills, particularly in coin cataloging.
- Experience working in a museum, special collections, or a similar environment.
- Proficient computer skills in relational databases and collection management software.
