Scholarship Description:
Dr. Zhang’s lab is located at the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern). Founded by Nobel laureate Dr. Bruce Beutler, the center boasts the world’s largest platform for forward genetic mutation screening in mice. The lab’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases, aiming to translate these mechanisms into therapeutic strategies.
The lab has screened over half of the mouse genome and identified dozens of new mutation mice associated with obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver, delving into their molecular mechanisms. Research primarily involves novel genes of unknown function and new metabolic phenotypes, exploring areas not covered by traditional metabolic studies.
In its four years since establishment, the lab has published multiple research papers in prestigious international journals, including PNAS, Nature Communications, Cell Metabolism, Trends in Cell Biology, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Cell Death and Differentiation.
Funding for the lab’s research comes from the National Institutes of Health (R00, R01, R21) and UT Southwestern.
The lab is currently recruiting postdoctoral researchers and welcomes candidates who have obtained or are about to obtain a Ph.D.
