Scholarship Description:

Prof. Yu-Tsun Shao joined the University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering as an assistant professor in 2023 and serves as the Technical Director of the USC Electron Microscopy Center.

He completed his undergraduate degree in Physics at National Taiwan University in 2012, studying under Professors Yong-Fang Chen and Wei-Fang Lin. He earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2018, under Professor Jian-Min Zuo. Following this, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Applied Physics Department at Cornell University, guided by Professor David A. Muller.

His research has received several honors, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Early Career Award (2024) and the Robert P. Apkarian Memorial Scholar Award from the Microscopy Society of America (2021).



 Available Subjects:

Electron microscopy and quantum materials.

  • In-Situ Electron Microscopy Techniques (In-Situ S/TEM)
  • Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Sample Preparation
  • Dynamical Diffraction Theory (CBED) Python/Matlab
  • Programming and Algorithm Development
